I think by now, Tony, the consensus is that uncertainty is probably
making people stick with what's in the manual, especially since there is
no manufacturer available to make recommendations as lubrication
products improve.

When I rebuilt the trunnions on my GT6, I used a grease on the
trunnions, because I had the feeling that oil would drain off over the
time it would take me to finish the car, but I used a Valvoline
synthetic intended for CV joint use.  I figured such a grease would have
the high-pressure characteristics required and wouldn't absorb water,
and would be reasonably kind to the trunnion seals, since it also has to
be compatible with CV joint boots. Only thing that didn't occur to me
was checking its reactivity to phosphorus, and since I think the
trunnions are phosphor bronze, it could bear on the choice.
