My mother is a wizard at this.  She only needs the clutch in first gear.  From 
there on 
out, she can shift silky smooth into the other gears without using the clutch 
or the 
synchro rings.  It's almost eery.

Myself, I'm a disaster at it, and not much better at double clutching.  I live 
for 
synchro's.
