According to the factory service manual of 1963 covering Herald 1200
/ Spit MkI / Sports 6 1600, the Herald has a drive shaft without a
telescopic section and the spit and sports 6 have the telescopic
section. My 2 Sports sixes and Mk I Spit have the telescopic section
and no " gearbox reaction plate ". My Herald 1200 has the "solid"
drive shaft and has the "reaction plate". I suspect that these two
items are related. It may be that without a telescopic drive shaft
they needed a way to controll end loads on the tranmission and
differential and thus the reaction plate. I'd feel free to leave it
off as long as you have a telescopic shaft. Dan VXHZ45A@prodigy.
