You've discovered the most common problem (aside from rust) with all later
model Spitfires. The springs tend to sag (or even break) within a couple
years leading to the problem you have discovered. The only cure is to have
the spring re-arched, or replaced with a new one. If you do replace it
don't discard the clamping plate, housing and rubber insert as these no
longer come with the spring's new and will have to be re-used with the
replacement spring.
