Chet: There is no inspection plate. What you need to do is remove the
starter, and that will expose the ring gear so that you can check it out.
Turn the motor over as you look at the ring gear, and try to spot any
missing teeth.
This reminds me of a funny story. When I bought my TR6, the DPO, (with
emphasis on the 'D') was having problems with the starter, or starters, as
it were. He was going through them at lightning speed. Well, there were
also clutch problems, so we had ended up removing the gearbox. We found
many humorous things inside, or maybe not so humorous, but among them was
that apparently the DPO thought that the bevel on the starter side of the
ring gear was a result of wear!!! So, he removed the ring gear and turned
it around so that the "fresh" side of the ring gear faced the starter! I
wonder if this could have been the reason for his starter troubles!!?? The
moral of this story is that the bevel is there for a reason... it helps the
starter gear engage with the ring gear.

I suppose that I would pull the gearbox out, Chet. It's not a fun job, but
it'll be easier than the motor.
For future reference, I think it is easiest when pulling the motor, to pull
both the motor and the gearbox all at once, regardless of whether you're
doing any work in the clutch/gearbox area. But, in this case, there's not
much reason to pull the motor.

P.S. Later on when I rebuilt the motor, I replaced the ring gear. Well,
the machine shop did the R&R for me, BUT, like the DPO, they installed the
new ring gear backwards, and I had to have them turn it around!!! GGRRRR!
