Question about a piece of cork stuck in the "side nozzel which the hose to the breather assembly attaches" is raised by Scott Suhring. I would suspect that it is a DPO bodge. This is an oil breather, and usually vents to the manifold (if memory serves correctly). Some DPO had probably removed the hose, and instead of having oil spraying throughout the engine compartment, he plugged it in a clever but bodged manner.
