Sorry to hear about your car. Several years ago I had an MGB that went
through similar pains. When (and they did) steal the car (on the second try)
they backed the car out of the carport with the door open. You guessed
it--they didn't see the pole. Nix one door.
The police called from the local convenience store where the car was parked,
engine running, backed into a parking slot near the door. The thief had run
out the back of the store and disappeared.
Lots of stearing column damage etc etc.
As for your seats, I have seen no used ones that do not need total
refurbishing. The is more costly than serious motor work. Be prepared to
pay little for the seats, but a fair amount for the rebuild kit. BTW, local
upholsterers are not a good place to go for the job. They can do fine work,
but tend to overbuild the foam and stuff. Then the top won't correctly fold
down and the seats won't correctly slide back.
We rebuild our 1500 seats ourselves. Foam came from Roadster Fact. and
covers came from Rimmer (about half the price of stateside suppliers, but the
exact same, and good quality, stuff). Give yourself about two afternoons.
Be sure to follow all the instructions about glueing the fabric to the foam
in certain places. Tedious, but came out very good.
Best of luck.
