You're right about the'rest of the world except the awkward ones' - 
My late (70) Mk3 (all UK Mk 3's had cenral instruments) - Black 
windscreen alloy blob reversing light etc) had 3 positions, off, 
lights, lights and instruments - never knew why you'd want to drive 
without the instrument lights (especially with a Gatso on every 
corner) but who am I to argue?

And yes I have a flasher too.
