Gold is measured in _troy_ ounces, 12 troy oz. to a pound.
Most everything else is measured in avourdupois ounces,
16 to a pound. The pound is the same, the ounces are different.

Troy oz. are named after Troyes, France, were they were first
used. The avourdupois and metric systems were also developed
in France, if memory serves. Just what is with their fixation with
weights and standards? Or Jerry Lewis? ;-) ;-) ;-)

If anyone offers you your weight in gold, get them to use ounces.
