I've just started following this group and I went through most of
the archives and I'm still confused as to what oil I should put in
the transmission. I have a 77 Spitfire which I bought about a year
ago. The previous owner had it about 3 years and the guy who sold
it to him had done a good bit of restoration. However, the previous
owner really didn't do much maintenance because when I asked him when
was the last time he checked the gear oil he said he didn't know he
was supposed to. This was at the same time he handed me a Haynes
manual for the car.
Anyway, I added Valvoline Durablend 85/90 GL-5 to the differential,
it was low.
I checked the gear box and it was full. I left it alone partly because
it looked like it was going to be quite difficult to fill it up again.
After reading all the gear oil traffic, I think I should change it
because I have no idea what is in there. However, the only GL-4 oil
I can find looks to be a cheap off brand. Should I put this in or
use a straight weight engine oil. If engine oil, which one 30, 40
or 50 weight. I live in Austin, Texas.
Are the 77 cars late enough that I can use a GL-5 without any worries?
BTW, the transmission seems to be doing fine other than a bad synchro
for second gear.
Thanks for reading,
Chris LeBlanc
