My .02 pence:
The single rail gearboxes come with both types of speedo cable
attachment.  Non-OD boxes have the bolt on retainer.  OD boxes
have the threaded connection (& expensive angle drive).

Just buy the appropriate (OD or non) later type long cable for your
transmission. A '78 model cable will work fine.
