I think Bob may be right. My 79 was suffering the same fate, however I
never tried to push start it. It was the ignition. I replaced it with the
Ignitor electronic ignition. This is a nice unit that boasts that once
you've set the timing you never have to adjust it again.
If you use the Ignitor, you have to cut one of the two wires that are
attached to the connector that plugs into the negative of coil.
Unfortunately, both of those wires are white w/ gray stripe so I can't
tell you which to cut. I was lucky and cut the right one. Once you
connect the Ignitor the car won't start until you disconnect these two
wires. However, your tach won't work until you connnect the correct wire
back to the coil.
I'm telling you this because the instructions don't.
