A little bit of historical knowledge: I had heard that the SU carburettor got its name from the Manufacturer, Skinner's Union. This was originally a leather working company (as the name implies). They got into the business because the bellows inside the carbs were originally made of leather. I have no idea if this is true or not, but it sounds good.
