Bill,
The "middle" muffler, my is a Thrush glass pack, is what gives you the
nice "throaty" sound when used with Monza or similiar exhaust systems.
The "tips" don't have much of a muffling effect other than to look pretty.
I just came to the realization that my headers are for an early TR6, and
they must be quite unique because they are tuned (pipes all the same length)
Monzas.
VB has Falcon headers for around $100. for GT6. You most likely will
have to remove the engine compartment panels and re-route the coolant
retun pipe from the back of the head to the water pump.
There are a couple of schools of thought about Monza and Falcon headers.
I wondered why the pipe was so small from the muffler to the "Y" for the
dual appearence tips.
The collector on my header is four inches in diameter. I capped it and
ran a 3 inch pipe to the muffler and a 3 inch pipe to the "Y". It did
improve the performance a small noticable amount, but the sound is deeper
and has been mistaken for a V-8 on more than one occassion.
Hope I've hel;ped you decide to go for the headers. They look neat, sound
good and do help performance. A great upgrade, but they are hard to keep
clen way up under the intake manifold.
