Hmm, the dreaded TR mainshaft circlip.

You need to be careful here. For those who haven't seen one, this is not
your average circlip. It's 3/32 or so thick, it's strong, and it -doesn't
want to bend-. In my experience, it's almost impossible to get a new one
installed without damaging it unless you have the special tool. If you just
pry it open and push it on, the clip will permanantly deform, and at some
point in the unknown future there's a good chance the whole mainshaft gear
cluster will get loose and destroy something. The "special installation
tool" prevents this by expanding the circlip evenly and just barely enough
to get it on the mainshaft, preventing any possible damage.

TRF often has the installation tool in stock, but it's $80 or thereabouts.
Perhaps your local TR club has one, or would like to...

The special removal tool makes getting the old one off an easy job, too,
but it's even more expensive, and unlike with the installation tool there
are other ways to do the job without permanant damage. One good one is to
carefully grind a notch in the clip with your (oh, dear) Dremel, and then
pry it open, at which point it will snap nicely in half and fall away...
