I know how much you all probably enjoy other people's misfortune! so
here goes!
Last night, driving home fromm work I had an unpleasant experience
with a sheared half shaft, leading to my offside rear wheel parting
company with my motor car, plus leaving the other wheel to dive up
into the wheel arch. I was doing about 45-50 Mph at the time. After
skidding/scraping along the road for about 200 meters with no brakes
as the drum had remained in the wheel (which itself was left 200
meters behind me), I came to a halt half on the road and half up a
dirt verge.
I checked out the situation this morning (after being recovered back
last night by the AA). Obviously the shaft was broken at the wheel,
plus the drum brake is trashed where it was used as a wheel for 200
meters. I was determined to do the work myself, the
biggest job I've undertaken since I got the car six months ago (All
ive done so far have been engine based such as timing, new fuel pump,
new distributor and a bit of tuning). I was amazed with the ease
with which I removed the broken shaft and shock asssembly. Ive yet
to remove the flange and the hub, so I may well post another mail if
I have any more problems!!
