A tire that is inflated to twice the pressure required is very unsafe;
the footprint it leaves on the road is minimal.
Hopefully, they won't laugh too hard when they read your letter. Yes, some
people like to wallow around on soft tires, inflated to some comfortable
pressure. Others prefer the improved grip and response one gets by reducing
the deformation of the tire by using higher pressures. This doesn't
even address the reduced heat buildup, a common cause of tire blowouts.
The tire squirms around less, less deformation and internal friction, less
heat buildup.
Then again, maybe those autocrossers who put 50 to 60 psi in their tires to
maintain tread stability and maximize grip during their runs would be much
better off sloshing about on 20 psi sponges.
And if you want to argue that contact patch is directly related to pressure,
start with a tire that with 0 psi holds up zero pounds of weight, that is, it
won't even hold its own self up and becomes a blotch of rubber on the ground.
