"Triumph sweeps E Production and wins F Production in the Champions'
Championships."
So says an ad that Triumph ran after the GT6+ took 1/2/3 in the 1969 SCCA
national championships class EP (home of 914s and MGBs, among others). The
Group 44 car, driven by Mike Downs, was the winner. This was a more-or-less
factory effort; Group 44 and the factory certainly exchanged lots and lots of
data, although Quaker State was the major sponsor of Group 44 in those days.
A GT6+ won the championship again in 1970. In 1971, SCCA bumped the car to DP
(because it was dominating EP) where it got to compete against carbureted TR6s,
Datsuns and Jensen-Healeys, and didn't really have a chance - although it did
win some races.
I've heard tales that Group 44 spent upwards of $10K reengineering the rear end
so that it worked well...
