Ted,
Bridge a screwdriver between the large copper stud terminals on the
starter solenoid. It should cause the starter to turn. If the starter
turns, your solenoid could very well be bad.
If the starter doesn't turn, it's a:
* Bad ground strap connection
* Low battery
* Bad starter cable connection
* Bad starter
If your starter did turn in the above test, but doesn't turn when you actuate
the key switch, check the solenoid by applying 12volts hot power to the side
terminal (white/red wire) on the solenoid. If the solenoid is good, the
starter will turn. If the solenoid is good at this stage, you have a
break in the white/red (starting switch) wire, or your starting (ignition
switch) is bad.
