I recently replaced the gearshift for my 77 spit. when I pulled out the old
one, there was what looked like oil on the bottom knob. When I replaced it
with my brand new shifter from Moss motors, I rubbed some thirty weight on
it and it worked fine. Now, after a week, the shifter seems to get stuck in
first. A hefty tug frees it up to shift into second. I assume that the
shifter needs to be greased again. Any suggestions as to what I should put
on it? Also, I found a stop nut that fits. The gearshift knob stop nut is
5/16" with a coarse thread available from your local Home Depot.
