Many thanks to all who responded to my query. I have contacted a Massey-
Ferguson tractor dealer in FL and he is working on locating a rebuild kit.
In the mean time I had ordered a new seal from BV which arrived today. With
the spare pump I had I was able to salvage a "synthetic rubber spinner" (as
described in the factory TR2/3 manual), which I was searching for through
this list (the part I had constructed a cross-sectional diagram of).
Additionally, as described in the manual, I had the water pump sealing face
re-cut. So earlier tonight I confidently assembled and installed my
"rebuilt" pump, started the car, only to find out it still
leaked....aaarrrgh! It isn't pouring out, just a drop every second or two,
but enough to know it should not be driven in this condition. Since I am
going on vacation on Saturday and had planned to go in the TR, I am
desperately seeking any suggestions on what I may have done wrong or
forgotten to do. I still have some time between now and then to make some
last minute corrections.
So, my evaluation so far is this - the new seal looked great and fit right.
It is compressible and one end seals against the recut face of the pump
housing and the other end is lipped and formed to fit into the recess of the
impeller. It did so very nicely I might add. Further along the shaft is the
spinner (this is beyond the seal and is not in contact with water) which is
held in place with a snap ring. The spinner rests against the opposite side
of the oversize opening through which the shaft passes. It serves to keep
the seal partially compressed against the recut face. To install the snap
ring it is necessary to compress the seal against the face to reveal the snap
ring groove on the shaft. At this point, the spring within the seal cannot
completely extend itself. It went together easily and smoothly and everything
seemed tight. Between the seal and the recut face is one location water
could seep through. Between the impeller and the seal is the only other
location. Somehow the water's getting through. Should I have filled the
recess of the impeller with plumber's putty or grease or something? Should I
have glued the seal to the impeller? Does it simply just take some time for
the new seal to seat itself against the recut pump face (it rotates against
it)? The factory manual says nothing about these things.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated as tomorrow is my last chance to
disassemble this unit and try again. If anyone has a TRF catalog there is a
good exploded view of the pump on page 66. BV has a good one also. So does
the TR factory manual of course. However, none shows the sealing face.
Moss's catalog doesn't show a complete exploded view at all.
When the Massey-Ferguson dealer gets back to me about pump rebuild kit
availability I will let everyone know.
Thanks in advance!!!
