You can bypass the heater but be sure to keep water flowing
through the passage in the intake manifold, the carbs would
probably percolate like H*** otherwise. Actually the real
problem may not be the heater, it may be that the cardboard
transmission cover is leaking air. An extra layer of padding
under the carpet that covers the transmission would certainly
improve things and it will cut down the noise as well. I don't
think bypassing the heater core would make much difference in
engine cooling. If it's overheating, drive faster :)
