Last week, I sent a request to the british-cars mailing list as
follows: (regarding a 1974 TR6)
> My gearbox makes a significant "whirring" noise when in neutral.
> Everything seems fine when the car is in gear (the whirring noise goes away).
> This whirring occurs independently of whether or not the car is in
> motion. (ie, I always get the noise in neutral, whether the car is
> standing still, or rolling.)
The consensus seemed to be that some of the needle bearings or pocket
bearings are worn, causing the layshaft to rub against something (the
worn bearings), causing a whirring noise.
Thus, it looks like a rebuild of my transmission is in order.
Reluctant to take my car off the road for any length of time, I
considered finding another transmission, rebuilding that, and then
simply swapping transmissions, so as to minimize downtime. Given that
plan, I hvae further considered doing the switch to an Overdrive (OD)
tranny as well, since I do a fair bit of highway driving in my TR6.
What I'm considering doing is finding an OD tranny, OD, OD-length
driveshaft, OD electrics, and OD switch for the steering column to
retro-fit OD into my TR6. I know this is a Frequently-Asked-Question,
but I haven't saved the results of prior discussions. I would like to
take the results I get, and summarize them in a form for the VTR WWW
pages. (If you reply to me, but don't want your input summarized in
the VTR WWW pages, let me know.)
Thus, I have two questions:
1) Is there anything else I'll need to do this OD conversion other
than the above? (My TR6 is a 1974)
2) Does anybody have any of the above components that they'd be
willing to donate, trade, or sell to me?
