Is that the only place they don't work, or have you found others?  Parking
at the curb suggests you are in a congested area.  I'm sure key fobs share
their slice of the RF spectrum with other services.  Could there be a
strong continuous signal nearby that overwhelms the piddling little signal
from the key fob?  Does your son have key fobs that work?
