Paul, and Tigers,
Here is what I believe to be "the skinny" in hardtop colors. The "GT"
came with a hard top, and it was body color. A "Special Order" came as
you ordered it.
A dealer sold Tiger did not even come with a hardtop, it was an extra
with hardtop ordered by the dealer. This would only be the case if what
you wanted was non-standard.
An consumer would not order from the factory, unless he was accepting
delivery abroad, but I believe it must be sold thru a US dealer.
Now, the situation that a normal consumer might be in, required the
dealer to stock hard tops as an accessory, and to paint it whatever the
customer wanted and paid for.
In 1959 I purchased a new Porsche 356 from Porsche dealer/racer driver
Jack McAfee. I wanted it black with red upholstery, and so ordered it.
Non were in stock, and I it took 3 months. I believe it was factory
ordered.
Got a phone call from Jack saying my car was in. It had GREEN
upholstery. I said "Jack, if I wanted it green I would have bought it
that way." He said he'd call me back. 2 days later my black Porsche
with red upholstery was ready. No, he didn't dye it. I presume another
customer wanted one, and he thought he could close both.
Similarly, when I was gazing at the Miata, they would paint the hardtop
(black) whatever other color I wanted. I was going to buy until I
looked in the trunk, which had room for your baseball cap (and ball
inside the hat).
Pardon me for wandering, but the issues were the same.
