Duke and others- I was telling a friend about using the oven vs boiling water
and the deep freeze to aid in axle bearing replacement when he remined me how
we used to install couplinggs on large belt drives in coal mine prep plants. I
guess as my age rises my memory looses--- anyway, during my millwright years we
often installed couplings that had to be heated up enough to slide onto a
shaft- many where pretty big and we used a container filled with enough oil to
cover the coupling and then used a cutting torch to heat the container and thus
the oil and coupling. Im not sure anyones wife wants them boiling oil in the
kitchen but in the shop and using the right heat source( torch has to keep
moving) it would be easy to heat the bearing enough to aid in replacing it on
the axle. Hope this helps someone.
