I have used a piece of the foam used to wrap water pipes. Typically it is
split and to some degree can be sized to slide over a protrusion, yet
retains enough friction to stay. Wrapping it with duct tap holds its size.
I recommend finding that ideal point between cushioning and extended too
far to be an annoyance. Of course you have to remember to put it on and
take it off but there has been more than one time that I've said to myself,
"I'm glad I remembered that."
