The bottom line here is that, whether someone snipes you or not, if you get
beat on a piece that's up for auction, then it was worth more to someone else
than it was to you. I'm a big slot car fan (HO scale Aurora T-Jets) and I have
bought many of them on Ebay. But, I've lost just as many as I've bought to
people who beat me in the closing seconds of an auction. Though it sometimes
is a bitter pill to swallow, in the end I have to concede that the person who
bought the car was willing to pay more than I was and that's just the way the
mop flops.
I agree that it's almost impossible to beat someone using a sniping service.
But, that person still has to put in a maximum amount that they will pay. If
your max is higher than their max, then you're going to win whether the other
guy is using a sniping service or not. The way I look at it, the sniping
service is for the people who don't have the time, or don't want to take the
time, to sit on the computer and watch an auction come to an end themselves.
