This is an interesting subject and one we (autocrossers) talk about
frequently. So much of the condition of a 2-3 year old tire is dependent on how
it
has been stored that it is really not possible to make a blanket statement. It
the tire has been bagged and stored in a climate controlled environment, you
will not be able to measure any difference in performance. On the other hand,
if the tire has been subjected to freezing/heat cycles, it won't perform as
well and will also wear quicker. Outside of tires with dry rot and sidewall
cracking, I believe it is really more a matter of comparative performance than
getting "killed on dried up versions".
