I'm not totally sure, but it might be done that way to keep the
heavy-duty contacts from arcing too much when the starter is disengaged.
Pulling a hundred amps or more through a big inductor (which is what the
starter motor is for all intents and purposes) and then suddenly
breaking the circuit would give a significant arc and over time would
vaporize at least one side of the solenoid contacts.
