You have an early style, 1962 distributor and it should have an oil
port and a round center section; date code = third week of Feb 1962.

The # is more likely C20F; I do not have a listing for a C2DF part.
C20F 12127 J is for a 221 engine; the earliest 289 would have a C3AF
distributor.

The engine block will have a build date code on a machined pad just in front
of the left head, unless the block was decked then it might be gone.
The ID #s on the distributor generally follow with the model year of the
car.

The biggest problem with the early style distributor is the mechanical
advance mechanism, it wears too quickly.

I suggest you pull the breaker plates out and examine the Cam plate
slots for wear and the posts on the 2 weights for wear. If these parts are
worn any the advance curve will hang up sooner or later and you will need to
locate a new distributor. The parts for the early style distributor are
nearly unobtainable now or very costly if you find them plus they will wear
out just the same. That is the reason for the later style distributor and
the better advance mechanism with very much less wear characteristics.

Personally I would look for a Later style distributor at a swap meet or a
wrecking yard that has older car available, even EBay will have them and
rebuild it myself, but that is me. I believe all the Early Mustang Catalogs
carry the later style distributors if you just want to get a new or
remanufactured one.

Thanks Ron;

You are a fountain of information.

I exercised some diligence, stood on my head with a flashlight and a
magnifying glass, and found these numbers:

C2DF 12127 J
2BC

Looks like a unit between stock and your later version. When we did the
engine re-build, the rod bearing inserts were marked 1967, and it is a 289
block, so its likely the distributor came with this engine that was probably

out of an American (Mustang?) car. (My car came from Mass.)

I took the vacuum advance unit off and it had no numbers on it, nor a tab to

locate the dizzy cap. Must be a unit off another
distributor. At any rate, thanks also for the number of the Crane
adjustable vacuum canister. The poor guy at Summit had a tough time finding
the
proper advance unit for me.

I will call back and give them this number. In the meantime, I have locked
the vacuum advance plate and set the timing normally. Should be ok until I
get the new unit installed.

Thanks again,

Dave
