Again, my sincere thanks to everyone for the excellent feedback. To
answer a few questions:
- The distributor does not have vacuum advance -- mechanical only.
- I didn't rev the engine at all when I went off the road. It was
ALL about brakes and steering.
- There distributor has been converted using a Mallory Unilite
module.
- The problem I am experiencing is not RPM-related. It is
entirely load-related.
I don't know that it is related to the problem that I am trying to
solve, but I'm also suspecting that the balancer has slipped and is
reading incorrectly. I'll try to validate that tomorrow. I'd forgotten
how little room there is to work on these Tigers! This is especially
true of cylinder 1 with that big generator in the way! My first Tiger
had an alternator retrofitted.
Thanks again,
Shaun

Do this first and then check to make sure that when it says 0 on the
balancer the #1 piston is truly on top. The outside ring can slip on
the rubber. -- Bill --
Check to make sure that someone has installed the distributor wrong.
With #1 TDC the rotor should be pointing to #1 on the cap.

Hi, folks.
I finally got an opportunity to check the timing on the car today, but
not much else as we are on out way out to a friend's birthday
celebration. The manual indicates 6 degrees BTDC, with a notation that
it is acceptable to go an additional 5 degrees to deal with altitude,
and to optimize performance and fuel economy. I have also seen
elsewhere that 6-8 degrees is normal. So, I was a bit surprised to see
25 degrees! Does this seem appropriate? I tried retarding the timing
down to 10 degrees to see if that helped, but the same problem occurred
(harsh sound from the induction system under load), and the engine
really didn't seem to run as well as with the initial setting.
I hope to get some more time to work with this later or tomorrow..
Thanks,
Shaun
