I'm also curious what aftermarket fuel pump solutions are out there for the
stock Mk1A Tiger pump location. I installed a Holley "Red" electric fuel
pump in the stock location. The fuel pump has repeatedly overheated and
conked out, leaving me coasting with a dead engine. After a few nervous
minutes on the shoulder, it would cool down enough to get me going again.
Filters were clear; tanks have been recoated. The Holley tech line
explained it was a common problem when the pump is mounted in a location
above the tank. As a gravity-fed pump, it should be mounted below the fuel
source (such as the Mk2 location in the trunk well). I'd prefer to avoid
drilling holes in the trunk for fuel line entry/exit plus mounting holes for
the fuel pump, if possible.

What aftermarket pumps have others successfully installed in the Mk1/Mk1A
location?

Thanks much,

Subject: [Tigers] Another Tiger Fuel Pump Question

Coincidentally, I've been running one of those little cube fuel pumps
too for years and am thinking I need to change it to a better one. I
switched to the cube after my stock pump failed two times in one year.
The cube pump has run for the last several years but I had vapor lock
problems yesterday ... stalling at idle after sitting with the engine
off for a while after driving in 90 degree weather. Hottest day of the
year so far here in Arizona. It would re-start immediately after
stalling and drive OK, but stall again when I got to the next stop
light. By the time I got it home after a 10 minute run, it idled fine again.

I just checked my under the hood fuel pressure gauge I have installed
right before my Holley carb.. On immediate cold start up, I get 4 1/2
pounds of pressure. Five minutes or so later, when the engine is at
running temperature (180-190 degrees), fuel pressure has dropped to
slightly over 3 pounds. That's what it read yesterday when I had the
stalling problem. Is this normal, or should I be getting a constant 4
1/2 pounds of pressure no matter what the water temp? I wonder if this
is what's contributing to what seems to be vapor lock. Maybe the pump is
not strong enough to push the fuel through in hot weather?

By the way, I already have my mufflers heat shielded, and have the fuel
line wrapped with Thermotec heat shield all the way from the tanks to
the carb.

The next question is if I change, which pump should I change to? I get
about 250 HP at the rear wheels now, if that may be a determining
factor. Has anyone out there had vapor lock issues, change to another
fuel pump, and solved the problem?

Steve Sage

P.S..I'm going to post separately now on my successful intake manifold
upgrade for anyone interested.

mounts to the car. I know generally where it goes, but was there a
mounting bracket of some kind? Would someone be willing to snap a photo or
two of their fuel pump so I can see how it mounts in? My Healeys and my
MGC have brackets that mount to either the body or the frame. Does
something similar go in the Tiger?
