Tony,
I think that the part that came off with just a few taps of the hammer
is the rear drum... to remove the axle hub you have to undo the 1 1/4"
nut that is on the end of the axle (torque spec is 125 footpounds or
something like that - get a big breaker bar) and then pull the hub off
the tapered end of the axle.
You can remove the axle with the hub attached but you need to undo the
four backing plate bolts, pry the axle retainer/seal plate loose (it
will probably be held on with sealer of some sort) and then use a slide
hammer attached to the axle nut or several of the lug studs. If there is
a spacer shim behind the seal plate, then make sure you keep that as
it's used to get the axle bearing preload right.
