You will notice though that Mercedes quit making them. I think they had

and i'll add to that, that towing or off the start you have so much
torque in a diesel that it far outstrips the petrol. its not max
power you want for towing but torque for the low end power.
but i agree those old 70's merc diesels were awful. in germany they
were only really used for taxis.
