Hi Tom,
When you prime the oiling system using an electric drill motor on the
oil pump shaft, the cam and crank aren't rotating and not much if any of
the oil is going to come spraying out onto the cam lobes. You should be
able to prime the system until you get all the air out of the various
galleries, the filters, etc. without worry.
It takes quite a bit of power to turn the oil pump, and I have a friend
who overheated his drill motor by trying to pump the oil through for too
long. Last time I did this I used my 1/2" Makita and it didn't have any
problem, although I had to keep a very firm grip on the motor.
