John,

I am using Michelin X 185/70/13 steel belted radial tires. These used
to be tires of choice, back when the car was new, and before. It seems
to be only sold by Costco, at a reasonable price.

Compared today's Auto-X tires they are harder, and less rain capable,
but last forever.

To avoid tire rub, there are a number of things you can do.

   1. Make sure wheel offset is stock.
   2. If not, there is a thin lip of sheet metal on the inside edge of
the rear wheel well that sticks into the rear tire well. I had
this slightly ground until the innermost lip is brought back to
the (in my case) upper lip, and clears the side wall.
   3. If your problem is up front, it could again be incorrect wheel
offset, which could require bending the lower front fender edge in
to form a horizontal "wing" to get this out of the way. Done
well, it is not observable from the outside.
