thanks (or tanks) for all the good advice:
in medicine we always think of Occam's razor - one thing should
explain all the problems - i.e. patients with multiple complaints
should have one diagnosis. likewise, when trying to solve a problem,
you should fix one at a time.
in this case, i first planned on fixing mutliple things since the cat
would be down, but as many of you alluded a more systematic approach
would be better although may take a bit longer.
so 1st step - fuel system. I have changed the fuel filter in the past
and it was pretty crudded up. I will pull the tanks today and flush/
recoat them. i contacted a local shop to do the flushing for me 'cos
I do not need to deal with that mess. the fuel pump is already new
(holly) mounted in the trunk with braided lines, so it should not be
the problem. I will also pull the carb and clean it as it may be
gunked up. The carb is also fairly new - holley as well. after that
is done, i will drive it for a little bit to see if that problem is
cured.
if not, i will then address the electrical which I will want to do
anyway - 2 fuses just ain't enough. the consensus from those replying
think the one wire GM alternator is better, so I will be heading this
route as well. replacing the wiring harness will allow me to also
remove all the accumulated splices in the hood and under the dash,
and hide the wiring. the ignition systems is already updated - MSD
and hopefully is not problematic.
i'll keep you informed as i go along. it almost seems like i should
just gut the car and restore it, but then i probably would not want
to drive it daily...
