I always use a floor jack and have removed / installed springs probably 10 
times, although there have been safety warnings to not do that. The spring 
is so trapped in there that by the time you get to where it can fly out it 
is almost out of spring. I am ready to put mine  back in this weekend after 
rebuilding everything and plan on using the jack method. I plan to wrap some 
rope around it and tie off to the front end just in case.
