If your car has an unmolested electrical system... Then there is a large (10
gauge) brown wire running from the starter solenoid (on the right front of
the firewall) to the generator regulator (on the left fenderwell, just
behind the fusebox). From an electrical standpoint, this wire needs to be
broken into two sections, and the ammeter inserted into it. Practically,
it's easiest to disconnect the 10 gauge wire connection from the regulator,
pull the wire back through the firewall, and connect it to one post of the
ammeter. Then a new piece of 10 gauge wire connects from the other post on
the ammeter, to the connection on the regulator.

It's VERY important that the connections at the ammeter are as clean as
possible and that they are tight. Any grunge or loose connection here will
cause the ammeter to get hot and melt itself. Do NOT use spade lug adapters,
even if those happen to be attached to the ammeter.

TO see if the ammeter is working, reconnect the battery (oh yeah... You did
disconnect the battery before you started, right?), and turn on the
headlights. The ammeter should read about -10 amps. If it reads +10, then
reverse the two connections on the back of the ammeter. Starting the engine
should give you a positive reading, indicating that the battery is being
charged.

Best regards,
Theo
