The plastic holder should have a piece of U-shaped sheetmetal going over top
of it, and the two ends of the U insert into the slots on each side of the
thumbscrew. If you don't have the piece of metal anymore... you need to find
or make one. It's an essential part of the current transformer. I've never
checked into it in detail, but a piece of galvanized steel sheet should be
okay for this purpose. It has to be a ferromagnetic material. Not aluminum,
copper, brass, etc.
