There's not much that can go wrong with a stock gauge, other than when
someone tries to fix them. If the gauge needle moves in some relation to
engine RPM and load, then it's probably OK. 
The regulator is pretty much the opposite. I'm surprised that _any_ of them
still work as designed after 40 years (whether it's been used a lot in that
time or a little).

As was mentioned before: If you have high temperature readings AND the fuel
gauge is very optimistic (i.e. reads 8 gallons left when you know there are
only 4 gallons in there) then the regulator is at fault, not the two gauges.
