But you shouldn't have to do this unless you're installing a brand new
generator. Polarizing the generator (or alternator, for that matter - the
same principle applies) just establishes a small amount of magnetic
polarization in the steel parts of the armature and field, and this allows
the generator or alternator to self-generate, even when the battery is
completely dead and no field current can be supplied. If you've got a
halfway decent battery then it will supply current to the field and that
generates the correct sense of magnetization. Running the engine with the
charging system operation will leave a small amount of residual magnetism in
the armature too.
