Phil,

You are describing my car to a "T", which has the original 2.88:1 rear 
axle and a Mk II wide ratio gearbox.  Great performance in the lower 
gears, with the stock top gear that gives 72 mph at 3,000 rpm with 
165Rx13 Michelin tires.
