Glad to hear your speedo is jumping! That means you're driving it!
It's probably your speedo, not the cable, although the cable itself
could have broken the speedo. The commonly available Ford speedo cable
has an end that projects into the speedo too far. Pull the cable at the
speedo end and see if the portion that fits in the speedo is about
3/8". If it's longer than that, it probably broke the speedo. About
$75 to get it rebuilt.
If you have to replace the cable, you get to it at the transmission end
by removing a panel on the transmission tunnel on the drivers side.
There's a hold-down there that is a PITA. Do yourself a favor and grind
the bottom of it off so that you can rotate it on and off the cable
end. Otherwise you'll find you need three tiny hands to get it back on...
