Frank,
  I did the same things you did with sealant on the gaskets, shims (very
light on the shims), backing plate, backing plate reinforcing ring and seal
housing. I even used sealant on the bolts. My car is still sitting after
years too and yes...., I recall have seen the film of oil also at some
point. It was a while ago, but I think I cleaned it off. Anyway, I just
checked and there is no more present. If you put anti sieze on the inside of
the hub (as is recommended), it might be where you are finding the oil from.
 I used Valvoline Semi Synthetic bearing grease if it matters. I also found
that the seal holders were not very flat. I straightened mine as best I
could, made my own gaskets extra thick (as this does not effect end play on
the seal side) and here I did use lots of sealant. So, that is my
experience, but not sure if it relates to your WT..... .
