Most engines expend a significant amount of torque swishing the crank and
rod big ends through the fog of oil in the crankcase. A windage tray and/or
crank scraper helps to keep the oil that's in the sump from getting whipped
up by the crank. I've heard of gains as large as 20 HP from installing a
windage tray, but as we all know, YMMV, and I don't have a definite dyno
result to point to for that number. I never dyno or track tested my car,
either before or after the windage tray went in. It takes a significant
power increase to feel it in the seat of your pants, and there wasn't THAT
much difference.
It helps to have a deeper sump, as well. I'm not sure if a windage tray can
be installed or be fully effective in a stock oil pan, and the deeper sump
helps to keep the oil surface away from the crank.
Best regards,
