Ken:
I have had very good success with an aftermarket fan made by Derale.
The number is 17015. It's 15 inches in diameter and does not need to
be trimmed if your engine is mounted properly (it may be necessary to
shim the motor mounts slightly). I learned about it from the article on
the TEAE web site <http://teae.org/tech_tips/hot_air.html>. The center
hole will fit over the shaft on the water pump but you will need to make
a 1/2 inch spacer for it to fit flush. When installed on my car, about
2/3 rds of the fan fits inside the shroud and the other third protrudes
into the space between the shroud and the engine. This appears to
allow the fan to dump the air into the space beyond the shroud,
instead of just spinning it around inside the shroud as is the case with
some of the fiberglas fans I have seen. My car would reach temperatures
over 212F at idle before installing the fan. It now seldom will reach more
than 190F. I don't remember where I bought it, but most speed shops
can order it, or you can search online. Cost - about $35-40. It goes
without saying that all the components in the cooling system need
to be in good condition as well.
