I took the liberty of responding to the list because my own experience
may be of interest to the rest of Tigerdom, and Alpinedom (and maybe
even Hilmandom?).
While keeping up with traffic on the 101 freeway, at 65 mph, I heard a
noise and saw my headlight rim go bouncing off of the dividing concrete
barrier next to the innermost lane (no emergency lane). Knowing how
rare that rim is, my immediate reaction was to start to brake, so I
could get out and find the remains amongst the fast traffic.
My wife's instant screaming awoke me as to how foolish such a move would
have been. She thought it would be easier to find an NOS rim than an
NOS, low mileage husband! (not to ignore the risk to the rest of the car
and the wife).
Bottom line, I purchased a fine condition used one (or it might have
been two later units with screw pass-throughs)
, bought a set of screw clips for the later model Tiger Mk IA/Alpine at
a very cheap price from Sunbeam Specialties.
This clip snaps over the headlight bucket edge, over an existing slot
(as I recall) and allows an external stainless sheet metal screw to
firmly holds the rim to the body after the opposite clip rim lips are
engaged in the body lips.
Roughest roads haven't budged them, and they are easy to remove with a
fiber square keeping the screw from finding your tread.
The British change design seldom, and reluctantly, as it must have been
designed perfect the first time. Especially as there is no
communication between the parts department profit center and the
engineering design unit. ;-) But they did, here!
Check out whether you need that external screw hole, with depressed
conical seat, to determine if you need 1 or 2 (lots of Listers will
instantly help my lame memory of this 5 year old event. I could just as
easily have drilled the hole and used a center punch to make the conical
seat! :-) )
