To get the spring off of the valve Theo gave good advice and I am
sympathetic to Tom in never being successful in using a device to hold the
cylinder full of air. The secret is to pressurize the cylinder with air and
be sure to have the rocker arm removed (piston location is irrelevant as
long as you maintain air pressure) The trick is to 'rap' the edge of the
retainer with a hammer gently at about 30 degrees apart completely around
the retainer until it is loose. It may take several whacks especially with
weak factory springs. I have seen removed heads on a work bench that would
not budge with a pneumatic spring compressor until this was done. Once the
retainer is "unseated" it will compress VERY easily. Be VERY careful to not
hit the Valve tip with the hammer or it may very well eat the rocker tip.
Installation of a positive valve seal may be impossible to do with out
damaging it as a sharp edge develops on the edge of the retainer groove.
Some emery paper may work well before you attempt to install a new seal but
I was not clear if your heads were machined for positive seals on the
exhaust or do they have an umbrella seal?
